First-ever TED Talk Tuesday a Great Success

TED Talk TuesdayOur first-ever TED Talk Tuesday event this week proved to be well attended and much appreciated by the nearly 40 community members who attended.  The theme of this month’s event was Diversity.

This event, designed to involve the larger community in the kind of rich dialog and idea exchange that characterizes Explorations Academy classrooms, involves presenting, and then discussing, a videotaped TED talk.  For those of you unfamiliar with TED — an acronym for technology, entertainment, and design — it  is a series of brief but inspiring lectures on a wide variety of topics.  Inviting the community to this event represents what we call “Folding Outward” — the expansion of the educational scope of Explorations Academy.

For the inaugural January session of TED Talk Tuesday, we showed a talk by writer  Chimamanda Adichie called The Danger of A Single Story, in which she explores the how we often accept a single narrative at the expense of understanding the richness of information that underlies each individual and culture.  Following the video, shown in Explorations Academy’s Lower Level Theatre, rich and lively discussion engaged two subgroups of participants for over an hour.

We plan to make TED Talk Tuesday a regular series.  The next session will be held on Tuesday, February 4th, at 7pm, again in the Explorations Academy Lower Level Theatre.  The theme for the February session will be Education and Creativity.  Please feel free to join us.  Our Lower Level Theatre is  located at 1701 Ellis Street, #101, here in central Bellingham.
